William Mailahn was the 6th child, and second eldest son, of the Mailahn family. He was described as having a morose disposition as a child and was highly devoted to his mother. He took the death of his mother very hard, and after a serious head injury from a horse his behavior worsened and he became even more withdrawn. He would hold in his feelings and frustrations, not allowing himself to vent. He began to complain that it would be better if the remaining family took their own lives rather than wait for their slow deaths by tuberculosis. Finally, one February day after a heavy snow, he insisted that his brother Edward go to take wood to the school and pick up their younger brothers. With Edward gone, William quickly took the life of their father, and then more easily killed their younger sister and brother before taking his own life. He never married or had children.
