"His father was in a large way of business up to the time of his death, and that business was now [1895] carried on as a company. He was educated at Marlborough up to the age of 17, and then went to a private tutor, and afterwards entered the Militia, with the idea of getting through to the Army. In 1883 witness came into a sum of 45,000, and lived a life of pleasure in town, having no occupation"
