Steven J. Thornton, MD is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with advanced subspecialty training and certification in sports medicine surgery. Dr. Thornton is a leader in the field of minimally invasive surgery, and specializes in shoulder, knee, hip and elbow surgical procedures, as well as cartilage restoration and regenerative medicine.
Dr. Thornton earned his medical degree from the University of Mississippi, where he was elected to join the Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Medical Society and was awarded the Donald Imrie Award for Most Outstanding Performance in Orthopaedic Surgery. He subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and also completed a traveling fellowship in orthopaedic surgery at Norwich’s Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom. Thereafter, Dr. Thornton was awarded the prestigious sports medicine and shoulder surgery fellowship at Cornell University’s Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. While there, he cared for players on the New York Giants, New York Mets, as well as many collegiate-level athletes.

Dr. Thornton is widely recognized as one of the leading sports specialists in the region. He performs many revision surgeries and specializes in highly technical cartilage restoration procedures. He is one of the top performing surgeons in the DFW metroplex for superior capsular reconstruction, ACL repair, revision ACL reconstruction, revision rotator cuff repair, meniscal root repair, cartilage restoration procedures, surgical treatment of tennis and golfer’s elbow, and hip arthroscopic labral repair.

Dr. Thornton is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the Texas Orthopaedic Association. He has a long history of working with athletes at the highest levels, having served as head team physician for the Texas Wild professional tennis team and as the orthopaedic surgeon for the NCAA Final Four Men’s Championship, the Hamlet Professional Tennis Tournament, Visa America’s Gymnastic Cup, and the United States National Figure Skating Championships.

In addition to his work with patients, Dr. Thornton contributes to advancing the field of orthopaedic and sports medicine surgery. He is a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroscopy and has presented academic sports papers worldwide. In addition, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters on a wide range of sports medicine topics, such as rotator cuff repair, ACL reconstruction, and elbow ligament reconstruction in athletes. Dr. Thornton is committed to offering his patients cutting edge technology and works closely with some of the most innovative companies in sports medicine.

Outside interests include sharing time with his wife and three children, travel, golf, and he is an avid sports fan that attends Ole Miss football games whenever he has the opportunity.
