Elijah F. Purdy was Alderman of the 10th Ward of New York City and a member of the Board of Supervisors for the County of New York. He was also, on multiple brief occations, acting Mayor of New York during the illness or absence of the mayor.
In August of 1841, as acting mayor of New York, he called for the exumation of Mary Rogers body in New Jersey to be examined by the coroner in New York and positively identified.
